Bayard Stockton (1853-1928)

Bayard Stockton, son of Richard Stockton and Caroline (Dod) Stockton, was married first, May 19, 1881, to Charlotte Julia Shields, daughter of Professor Charles Woodruff Shields and Charlotte Bain Shields. She died January 13, 1891, and he married second, July 12, 1894, Helen Hamilton Shields, half-sister of his first wife, born 1860. He was a lawyer, practicing in Trenton, and was State Prosecutor for many years. He was a Democrat and an Episcopalian. He was born in Springdale, but with the help of his father-in-law, Dr. Shields, he bought back Morven from his third cousin in 1891 and it remained in the possession of this branch of the Stockton family for another fifty years. He and his second wife, Helen Shields Stockton, were hosts to a number of guests at a "Colonial Party", celebrating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Stockton seat at Morven, on Christmas night, 1901. The guests all wore Colonial costumes, some of them ancestral gowns of that period, and they represented some of their ancestors who had either lived in of been entertained at Morven, as well as representing the distinguished people of the past who had been entertained at Morven during Colonial and Revolutionary times, especially while Congress was in session at Nassau Hall. Such as Elias Bouinot, President of the Congress, General Washington, Presidents Madison and Jefferson, President Witherspoon, Colonel Aaron Burr, Governor Livingston, Colonel Alexander Hamilton, General"Light Horse" Harry Lee, Philip Freneau, the Poet of the Revolution, a Dutch fire-dance, the kindling of the Yule log, a loving cup of ceremony "May the Hearthstone of Morven never Grow Cold", and supper was followed by the old-fashioned Sir Roger de Coverly dance, and the evening drew to a close.

Mrs. Helen Stockton was much interested in Morven's Colonial history and on several other occasions Morven was opened to the public - one in 1932, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Garden Clubs of America at which time Mr. Stockton's granddaughters, the Misses Martha and Charlotte Stockton, were dressed to represent Annis Boudinot Stockton and Julia Stockton Rush, and received the visitors in the gardens and grounds of Morven. Mr. Stockton died at Morven on May 18, 1928, and Mrs. Helen Stockton died October 25, 1949.
